A MAN died after throwing himself off a cliff in a suspected suicide.
Emergency services were called to Lee Quarry in Stacksteads shortly after 3pm yesterday and found the man.
His body was at the foot of the quarry and he had suffered multiple injuries.
The man was later identified as 33-year-old Andrew Thompson. At the time of going to press, his address had not been revealed.
Police said his death was being treated as suicide and that officers would be preparing a file for the coroner.
Mountain rescue teams, firefighters and police were called to the scene.
Andy Simpson, deputy team leader of Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue, revealed there were 17 members of his outfit involved.
He added: "We were called initially to what we thought was a quad bike rider who had gone over the cliff but as we got closer to the incident it became clear that wasn't the case.
"There was no bike, just a man in his mid-30s who was lying at the foot of the quarry.
"It ended up we were there to help recover the body."
A police spokesman added: "We were called to the scene along with the ambulance service but when we arrived there was a dead male at the bottom of the quarry.
"We are not looking for anyone in connection with the incident and there are no suspicious circumstances."
The quarry is owned by Lancashire County Council and the desolate area is a popular spot for local dog walkers.
A spokesman for Rossendale Fire Brigade added: "We got called to help with a rescue but when we got there we weren't needed."
