AN 80-year-old woman who died two days after taking an overdose of aspirin told her son she had been stupid and wouldn't do it again.
But an inquest heard the overdose had done irreversible damage and Kathleen Wilkinson died as a result of multiple organ failure.
Colin Wilkinson told the inquest his mother suffered from dramatic mood swings but had seem to be all right in the days before she took the tablets.
He told how he and his wife had taken Mrs Wilkinson for a day out at Haworth, one of the last places she had visited with her husband before his death in April 2004.
"It was a nostalgic day out but she enjoyed herself and seemed to be in good spirits," said Mr Wilkinson.
On February 1 at 3am Mr Wilkinson heard his mum being sick at their home in Wareham Close, Accrington. He asked what she had taken but she said nothing'.
"I checked her tablets and they were all there," said Mr Wilkinson. "It was only later that I found she had another bottle of aspirin."
Mr Wilkinson said that while his mother was in hospital she said she was sorry for what she had done.
"I have been a fool,"she told her son. "I was fed up because I missed your dad."
Mr Wilkinson said he believed his mother had intended to take her own life but quickly changed her mind.
Coroner Michael Singleton recorded a verdict that Mrs Wilkinson killed herself.
