AN 81-YEAR OLD blind and bedridden woman had to be rescued after a fire broke out at her Burnley home today.
It is believed the woman had been smoking in bed when the fire started in a downstairs room being used as a bedroom in Gibsburn Grove at 7.10am.
The 84-year-old husband managed to escape but the woman had to be carried by firecrews who arrived to find smoke coming through the front door.
The elderly couple were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation but did not go to hospital.
A small section of carpet and bedding was damaged by flames.
Watch manager Neil Ashworth warned others about the dangers of smoking in bed.
Fire crews were expected to return to the area today to carry out fire safety checks in the area.
