AFTER my plans to make Mother's Day for my partner extra special were thrown into chaos at the 11th hour thank goodness for the Gamecock Inn.

The picturesque pub provided salvation from my attempts at cooking and helped to make this a special occasion. The glass of free wine for mums helped as well.

It made for a nice day for a number of reasons. First of all, the venue is lovely.

Set on the outskirts of the town, the pub is close enough to civilisation and just far enough to the countryside to ensure peace and quiet. Secondly, the menu is excellent.

All the old favourites are there traditional roast dinners, steaks etc.

But there's a wide range of meals on offer, especially in the vegetarian selection.

My partner loves a roast dinner so the nut roast was right up her street.

The meal itself was nice but the potatoes didn't quite hit the heights of the rest of her meal.

I plumbed for the rump steak and I can't say enough good things about it.

The meat was cooked to perfection and melted in the mouth.

My young son, Isaac, gave a big thumbs up to the onion rings so a that's a seal of approval if ever one was needed!

For dessert, the strawberry sundae finished my meal off nicely as did the cheese and biscuits for my partner.

And Isaac loved the kiddies' under-5s fruit salad.

That was another huge plus for the Gamecock. The children's menu is split into over and under-5s, and represents fantastic value especially as part of a meal deal.
