A WOMAN who attacked another girl for dancing with her boyfriend was spared a jail term but not without a ticking off from a judge.

Lisa Harwood, 21, had threatened to batter Joanne Irving, headbutted her and then glassed her, leaving her scarred.

Miss Irving had to have 12 stitches after the early hours trouble in Burnley's Garden Bar last September.

Harwood, said to hold down a good job despite a caution for slinging ashtrays and glasses in a pub was given a suspended jail term by a judge who told her drink counselling would be part of it.

Judge Beverley Lunt told the defendant Miss Irving had suffered dreadful injuries and she should go to jail. She said: "Women don't headbutt."

But, the judge said Harwood had a good job and people who loved and supported her.

Judge Lunt continued: "I am going to be merciful today. I do not want to destroy everything you have positively managed to achieve in your life."

Harwood, of Leyland Road, Burnley, admitted wounding.

She was given a 36-week prison term, suspended for two years with 12 months supervision.

She must also pay £500 compensation and £245 costs and was warned if she did not go to counselling or offended again she would end up behind bars.

Sarah Statham, prosecuting, told the court the victim was dancing with Liam Everett, the defendant's partner, whom she had known for eight years.

Harwood approached her, looking angry and threatened to batter her. She then butted Miss Irving who fell to the floor.

The defendant threw a glass in her face, hitting her arm as she protected herself and knocking her unconscious.

John Sawyer, defending, said Harwood knew she had issues in relation to alcohol and anger management. She held her job as her most valuable possession.
