THE boss of Darwen Football Club is forging plans to make the Anchor Ground the hub of the town's community.

Club chairman Kevin Henry says the ground in Anchor Road stands empty throughout the week and outside of the football season, and could be more "economically viable" if put to better use.

Now he plans to entice a variety of community groups to use the club's facilities, placing the club more at the centre of the community to boost local links and the football club at the same time.

He is also planning car boot sales to bring more people to Darwen FC.

Mr Henry wants to hire out the ground, changing rooms and clubhouse and has already contacted several local organisations about the idea.

He said: "We are really trying to open up the facilities to the whole community.

"If we could open it up to other people they could contribute to the cost which would make it more economically viable for the club. We would like to see the clubhouse open seven days a week if enough people are interested.

"I've been in touch with a running club, chess group, cheerleaders and football teams, as well as jazz bands and country and western groups on the entertainment side.

"We've also got car boot sales planned for Easter Monday, Spring Bank Holiday and August Bank Holiday so people will have a chance to look at the facilities then.

"We all want the best for Darwen and are happy for people to slot around what the club is doing.

"Hopefully it will also generate more interest in football at all levels and ages and will encourage more Asian youths and those with disabilities to take it up.

"We are also looking at having a youth team if any junior teams are interested in linking up with the club."
