A CRACKDOWN was today being launched on Polish street beggars who have been targeting elderly people in Burnley for cash.
Over the past few days police have received several reports of people claiming not to speak English asking for money because their family had been in a road accident.
Officers today vowed to crackdown on beggars while also warning people not to hand over money.
Sergeant Vicky Haworth said: "We do not like begging. It can intimidate people even if it is not the person's intention.
"It can make people feel under pressure to give money.
"It is an offence and if we get evidence of people begging we will take appropriate action."
Police have received reports on begging across the town, but particularly in the Rosegrove area.
Incidents have taken place in Sycamore Close, Surrey Avenue, Brassey Street, all Burnley and Thompson Street and Burnley Road in Padiham.
Beggars are handing cards to people asking for help. Sgt Haworth called for anyone who was targeted by them to call the police.
She added: "There have been reports of Polish beggars saying they had been in a road crash and they need money for their children.
"Some of the areas where they are doing it have quite a lot of elderly residents.
"They are handing out cards saying they cannot speak English and can you help financially.
"We think it is just another way of getting money to finance the standard of living, and please do not give money to people begging."
Anyone wanting to report begging should call police on 01282 425001.
