AN ANNUAL disabled sports day which looked set to be cancelled has been saved thanks to the Lancashire Evening Telegraph.

Last month organisers appealed to Telegraph readers to find more people to take part in the annual event, organised by Accrington Rotary Club.

And now 35 people have come forward to take part in the day at Hyndburn Sports Centre, Church, on June 10.

Organiser Jacquie Hide said: "We have had a good response to our appeal but we are still looking for more people.

"We said that if we didn't have 30 people by the end of March we wouldn't go ahead and I am pleased people have come forward but I still want 65 or 70 people there.

"It is a great day and lots of fun. People don't have to be olympic quality, it is just about having a good time and trying something new."

Events at the disabled games, open to anyone with a physical disability, include wheelchair basketball, archery, table tennis, swimming, indoor bowls and shooting.

Last year a team representing the town, chosen following the event, finished second in the national disabled games in Coventry.

Ms Hide added: "There is no pressure on competitors and people might find they have a skill for something and get selected to go down to Coventry."

There are no geographical restrictions on competitors. In the past people from as far away as Southport and Manchester have competed in Accrington.

Anyone who wants to take part in the event can contact Ms Hide on 01254 234284 for an application form.
