As an ex-librarian and a classically trained composer, Simon Bookish might seem to be unusual underground pop star on paper.
But Bookish, real name Leo Chadburn, has dapper, foppish looks in his favour, and has made the switch from cerebral, minimalist classical music to pleasingly twitchy minimal electro-pop very smoothly.
He seems to have won all sorts of cultish friends along the way, including the bizarre Max Tundra, who provides an imaginative and unsettling remix for this single.
The track is aptly named for Terry Riley, an avant garde composer, and the lyrics form Bookish's statement of musical intent: "It's a hybrid art and a new direction. Scalpels at the ready. Artificial selection."
Clever, lively and more than a little bit odd.
Released March 27, 2006.
