A NEW exhibition celebrating the history of black footballers has opened at Accrington Library.
The exhibition, called "Culture Clash", was created by the National Football Museum, in Preston, and aims to dispel the myth that black footballers have only been playing for English teams since the 1970s.
Culture Clash' gives visitors the opportunity to find out about issues that have faced black footballers in England during their long involvement in the game.
Collectors items from across the world will be on display at the library, along with features on the world's first black professional footballer, Arthur Wharton, who played for Preston North End in 1896.
More modern footballers also come under the spotlight, with the career of John Barnes highlighted.
Carol Hoskin, from Accrington Library, said: "Most people have no idea that black footballers have been playing for English teams since the 19th Century.
"Their struggle to be accepted by football crowds, and recognised for their achievements, is an inspiring story."
The exhibition will run for the next two weeks.
