A 20MPH zone is being demanded by residents living in the Durham Road area of Darwen.

Blackburn with Darwen Council has confirmed it is investigating the possibility of introducing a reduced speed limit on the street after complaints.

The residents, in a letter to Blackburn with Darwen Council, claim the safety of children attending Avondale Primary School is being affected.

A spokesman for Blackburn with Darwen Council said: "It is reported that traffic regularly speeds down this section of road.

"The local school is accessed here and it is therefore suggested that the introduction of a 20mph zone would reduce the speed of the traffic for pedestrian use.

"Officers are now investigating this request and will carry out consultations with the police.

"The proposal will be advertised in due course to see what people think."

Several 20mph zones have been introduced elsewhere in Darwen, including the Birch Hall estate.

Large signs announcing the speed zone are erected at the entrance to the area.

Various traffic-calming measures, including humps, are also introduced to keep traffic from speeding up.
