GORDON Prentice has stepped up his campaign at Westminster to stop businessmen who sponsor government initiatives "effectively buying honours".
Last week the Pendle MP raised the issue with Tony Blair at Prime Minister's Questions alleging that rich people backing the government's flagship city academies were more and less guaranteed a knighthood.
Now he has put down a Commons motion and demanded a debate on the issue.
His Early Day Motion complaining about honours being given to sponsors of government schools initiatives has been signed by 14 other Labour MPs.
And he tackled Leader of the Commons Geoff Hoon on issue during Business Questions at Westminster yesterday.
He said: "This is a big issue. We do need a proper debate.
"This is becoming bare-faced. I don't think you should get a knighthood for services to education for simply writing a big cheque."
