A 73-YEAR-OLD sex offender has been banned from having any contact with children for an indefinite period.

Blackburn magistrates also imposed restrictions on William Murdoch which will prevent him hanging around schools and play areas and entering any park.

Murdoch, who is serving a prison sentence for indecency offences against young girls, agreed to the imposition of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) when he appeared before Blackburn magistrates.

The order, which will remain in place indefinitely, prohibits Murdoch from associating or communicating with anyone under 16; allowing anyone under 16 to enter his home; joining or attending any sports, educational or leisure institution which will bring him into repeated contact with any child; changing address unless approved by the police and entering parks, schools, play areas and country parks.

The court heard that Murdoch was sentenced on seven indecency charges in 2002 and had been released from prison in December 2003.

The concerns about his behaviour after his release on licence had led to him being recalled to prison and prompted the police to apply for the order.

Daniel King, defending, said his client accepted that his behaviour after being released had given legitimate cause for concern although he said there was no malicious intent on his part.

"He has a son in Blackburn but his main connections are with the West Midlands and it may be that when he is released he will relocate there," added Mr King.
