YOUNG vandals in Burnley were today warned to stop their yobbish behaviour or face landing themselves with criminal records.

The move comes after 34 separate incidents of graffiti in the Harle Syke and Lanehead areas.

Police said 26 youths would be signed up to acceptable behaviour contracts (ABCs) in connection with the vandalism and Anti Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs) would be sought against anyone refusing.

Police community support officer Dave Johnson said the culprits were tarnishing the area's reputation.

He added: "People see graffiti and damage and feel unsafe and that is simply not on, particularly when we've worked hard to achieve real reductions in crime, ensuring that our streets are actually the safest they've ever been.

"For their own sakes, they also need to realise that whilst most graffiti can be removed relatively quickly, the stain left by a criminal conviction can last a lifetime.

"Depending on the level of damage and number of offences, offenders could face fines and ultimately, convictions." Among the buildings tagged' (daubed with a graffiti signature) were Briercliffe Community Centre, Jubilee Street, telephone boxes and lock up garages.

ABCs are an agreement between police, youths and their parents that youngsters will no longer break the law.

PCSO Johnson asked residents to report incidents. He said: "If these youngsters know their behaviour will not be tolerated by the local community it will make a difference.

"Working together we can help to put a stop to criminal damage."

The Mayor of Burnley and Briercliffe ward councillor Coun Roger Frost, said the issue had been raised by the parish council and vandalism meant increased council tax to pay for repairs.

He added he would like to see a designated graffiti wall where youngsters could display their talents.

Coun Frost said: "There has been a problem and we are working with the police to try and sort it out."
