TO COMMEMORATE Holocaust Memorial Day Rossendale Council invited a wartime survivor from Germany to talk about his emotional experiences during the time when Hitler came to power and later in the concentration camps.
During his two day stay Karl Merschemmke spoke to more than 600 people from various schools and organisation in Rossendale.
He spoke about his personal account of life under Hitler and the severe cruelties faced by the Jewish people.
David Hampson, of Alder Grange High School, Rawtenstall, said: "We would like to thank Karl for his speech about the war.
"His personal account of the struggles he faced was both moving and fascinating. Karl has reminded and further reinforced our understanding of the suffering faced by the people during the Holocaust."
Councillor Peter Starkey, lead member for community cohesion, said: "Holocaust Memorial Day should be a time to hear the survivors recall their experiences, to reflect on how our society treated them, and to listen to what they can tell us that applies equally well to the world today. Karl's recent visit has helped to achieve this."
