More than 600 new cases of HIV are expected to be confirmed across the North West for the last year.
Reports to the Health Protection Agency show the rise in the number of new diagnoses between 2004 and 2005 is mainly due to a continued increase among gay men. Diagnoses in the North West reflect the pattern for the UK as a whole with 48% of the newly diagnosed infections acquired through heterosexual sex.
