VILLAGERS have been left amazed' after a survey found a road was safe despite 57 injuries and one death on it in the past five years.

Residents in Waterfoot are campaigning for measures to stop motorists speeding on Burnley Road East.

As a result, Lancashire County Council carried out speed checks, but found to residents' astonishment that most motorists stuck to the 30mph limit.

Now villagers feel the checks were carried out in the wrong place and are asking for them to be re-done.

At a Lancashire Local meeting, Whitewell Bottom resident Lynda Hannam asked how many more people had to be injured, or killed, before action was taken.

She said: "I live in Burnley Road East. How many injuries and accidents do you want? Is 58 not enough? Those results are wrong.

"When I travel on Burnley Road East, I keep to 30mph and the number of people who flash me, or overtake me, is ludicrous. I think you should conduct the survey again."

Coun Amanda Robertson echoed the comments, and said the survey was carried out at the wrong spot. She said: "The survey on School Street was not representative. There's been so much work digging up the road down there. They get past the school and then go at 70mph."

Lancashire Local panel member Coun David Hancock shared the public's concerns.

He said: "It's important we start at the section of Burnley Road East where traffic speeds are very, very high. It's a narrow road and dangerous. It's got bends, such as the one near the Hargreaves Arms, which are almost like chicanes.

"I'm amazed at these figures. If you do another survey I would ask that it comes back here for us to look at it again."

The county council is to look into the matter.
