TOURISM in West Craven could be set for a boost thanks to a grant scheme for entrepreneurs looking to set up tourist attractions and accommodation.

Pendle Council is trying to boost its tourism industry which brought £57million into the area in 2004 and is encouraging people to set up businesses in West Craven.

Coun Frank Wren, Executive Member for Tourism and Rural Economy, said: "The council recognises tourism as a major industry in Pendle and offers support to good quality new and existing tourism businesses, not just in West Craven but across the whole of the borough.

"Already in this financial year the council has helped a number of tourism businesses in the West Craven area.

"There's still some money in the pot for projects that are completed before the end of March 2006 which will help to bring more visitors to Pendle."

Among those to benefit is Thornton Hall Farm, a new tourist attraction on a working farm which was given nearly £4,000.

Grants have recently been given to Earby Lead Mining Museum to fund exhibition story boards within the recently refurbished building, as well as to tourist attraction Bancroft Mill.

Events which bring people into the area such as Balloons over Barlick can also qualify.

Mandy Pilkington, of Coverdale Farm Holiday Cottage, said: "We received a West Craven tourism grant of £2,000 which we used to help convert a derelict part of our farmhouse. Since we opened in July 2004, we have been busy.

"Without the grant, our opening would have been delayed. The grant really helped with the financial side of starting up a new business."
