FIVE Burnley streets have been closed to traffic as part of a major scheme to replace gas supply pipes.
The National Grid is replacing 600 metres of gas mains in the town as part of a multi-million pound package of improvements to the gas supply system in the North West.
The streets affected are Levant Street, Elizabeth Street, Collinge Street, Thompson Street and Pendle Street. There will also be temporary traffic lights in Thompson Street.
The work, replacing metal mains with plastic ones which have a lifespan of at least 80 years if left undisturbed, started this week and is expected to last until May. The mains renewal work in Burnley will cost £150,000.
Dave Walton, term contract manager said: "Work will cause some disruption to residents and road users but the safety and security of the gas supply system has to remain our top priority."
