EAST Lancashire folk were among the daring swimmers who plunged into icy waters for a New Year competition.
Despite freezing temperatures, 23 men, nine women and seven children plunged into Lee Dam, Lambutts, Todmorden, yesterday for an annual event.
Rossendale residents were among those gritting their teeth to compete for trophies in Todmorden Swimming Club's ice-breaker, the Lee Dam swim.
People of all ages took part in the village tradition, which started in the 1960s, as a large gathering of locals and visitors cheered them on from the relative warmth and safety of the bank.
Organiser David Sutcliffe was delighted with an increased turnout and said the conditions were not as harsh as previous years.
He added: "The turnout was very good but we've never done it on a Bank Holiday Monday.
"It was warm today compared to normal. We have had to break ice before."
Work colleagues Gay Sumner, 39, of Gincroft Close, Edenfield, and Neil Grimshaw, 40, of Shawclough Road, Waterfoot, agreed to take part after some friendly banter at Rossendale firm, Barnett Construction.
Before taking the plunge, Gary said: "We were having a bit of a bet at work and if I go back after the holidays and say we haven't done it, then I will get a bit of stick.
"I've never taken part before. It might be my last!"
