Lancaster City 0 Workington 4 (match abandoned 45 minutes - floodlight failure): Lancaster City's rollercoaster season hit new levels of strangeness on Tuesday when the match with Workington was abandoned at half time through floodlight failure.

But that's only half the story after a first half with a script that could have been penned by Brian Rix.

Goalkeeper Anthony McMillan was shown a red card less than two minutes into the game and City, without a replacement goalkeeper on the bench through financial constraints were 4-0 down at the break.

And then the lights went out. You honestly couldn't make it up.

Referee Tom Conway started the farce with his ludicrous decision to red card McMillan after he collided with Matthew Berkley 25 yards from goal after just 68 seconds.

Both players were hurt in what appeared to be an accidental clash but after three minutes of treatment, McMillan was shown a straight red card.

Maybe Conway got it right to the letter of the law but common sense would rule otherwise.

There was more chance of a Great White shark swimming up the Lune than of Berkely scoring and the collision was a case of two men going for the same ball.

Steve Skinner took over in goal and was beaten by the resulting free-kick from David Hewson before boss Peter Ward sent on sub Tony Sullivan.

The striker is adept between the sticks but for 20 minutes didn't have a touch as City took the game to Workington with Andrew Bond going close three times, while Michael Stringfellow shaved the woodwork with a 30-yarder.

But just when Lancaster seemed to have settled they were rocked again as Bond's backpass took a wicked bobble and bounced over Sullivan as he attempted to clear.

It was the freakiest of own goals.

Then Lee Hoolikin finished well a regular keeper wouldn't have stopped his shot before City went 4-0 down when Neil Uberschar put through his own net.

It appeared the lights had gone out on City's night and shortly afterwards they did.
