RAMSBOTTOM Civic Hall has been saved. At a full council meeting last night, Coun Mike Connolly, deputy leader of Bury Metropolitan Council, announced the hall would not be closed as part of controversial cost-cutting plans.
But, as the council set a council tax rise of 4.8per cent, he revealed the authority would be forced to shed 50 jobs in a desperate bid to balance the books The hall had been on a hit list as the council battled to make savings.
Officials blamed a poor block grant from the government.
Coun Connolly said the function of all civic halls would be reviewed to try and raise money from them.
A council official said the upstairs of Ramsbottom Civic Hall needed upgrading and did not comply with health and safety regulations.
