A 27-year-old shoplifter's attempt to steal a boxed set of Star Trek DVDs was described as an unsophisticated Enterprise'.
And Basharat Ditta, defending, told Blackburn magistrates that looking back his client might have used some superior Vulcan intelligence.'
"To his credit he didn't try to 'cling on' to anything he had taken and when the police arrived he may have thought the phrase 'Beam me up Scotty' would have helped him," said Mr Ditta.
Wayne Joyce, 27, of St Peter Street, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to theft from HMV.
He was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay £65 costs.
