A 28-YEAR-OLD man agreed with his mother that the best place for him was prison, a court was told.

And Blackburn magistrates heard the hope was that a "short sharp shock" would bring David Hargreaves to his senses.

Hargreaves, of Delf Close, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to theft of CDs worth a total of £80 from his mother Barbara Wrigley.

Hargreaves was jailed for 90 days.

Claire Fanning, prosec-uting, said Hargreaves, who has a history of drug problems, had been staying at his mother's home.

She received a phone call to say her son was trying to sell CDs in the Toll Bar pub and then called the police when she realised they belonged to her.

Roger Pickles, defending, said Mrs Wrigley was very supportive of her son but had reached the end of her tether.

"He had been on bail but that night she said enough was enough and called the police because he was drunk and had been threatening her and she didn't want him at her house any more," said Mr Pickles.

"She has made several appointments to see the doctor but she now says she can't mollycoddle him all the time."

Mr Pickles added: "He would like you to end these proceedings today, impose a jail sentence, remit his outstanding fines, and then when he comes out he can make a fresh start, no doubt with the support of his mother again."
