CHORLEY MP Lindsay Hoyle has called for the Government to scrap VAT on house repairs and improvements to boost energy efficiency.
He said that with energy prices rising, more needed to be done to help householders make energy-saving improvements to their homes.
But, he went on, while new-build homes did not attract VAT, repairs, improvements and maintenance did.
Mr Hoyle called on the Government to remove VAT on improvements to encourage people to modernise their homes, save energy and cash.
Leader of the Commons Geoff Hoon replied: "That sounds like an early budget submission to me.'' He said he would pass on Mr Hoyle's remarks to Chancellor Gordon Brown who has named Wednesday, March 22, as Budget Day.
Mr Hoyle said: ""I shall certainly write to the Chancellor on the issue before the Budget.
"We have a golden opport-unity on March 22 to do something about this.''
