When I was an apprentice the workmen from Chorley used to tell me that the Flat Iron was left to the people of Chorley in a will, to be used as an open space, for the people of Chorley, not to be cluttered with street furniture, etc, etc, or car parking or kerbs or buildings.
The girls from the Union Street offices said maybe it has a covenant on it. If so it should not be built on. There must be someone from Chorley who knows more about this than I do.
Previous to the Flat Iron it was called the Cattle Market for obvious reasons and circuses and fairs were held there as well as various other things in war time.
