Campaigners opposing controversial plans to build housing on a once treasured sporting facility have won a short term victory after the proposals were withdrawn by developers.

Chorley-based Northern Trust Company revealed a bid in December to construct 58 properties on the site of the former Chorley Motors Social and Athletic Club, Duke Street.

The plans in their present form have now been halted, but the company - which also owns the land - has revealed they are still in talks with Chorley planning chiefs over the future of the site.

Spokesman for Northern Trust, David Rydell, said: "I can confirm that we have withdrawn the plans pending further discussions with planning officers from Chorley Borough Council."

As part of the package, Nothern Trust, controlled by multi-millionaire Chorley tycoon Trevor Hemmings, offered a £250,000 donation to the council to spend on sports and leisure anywhere in the borough.

Similar plans for housing were thrown out in 1997 as the site is on land designated in the local plan for sports and recreation.

Objections to the plans were lodged by dozens of nearby residents campaigners who wished to see the land used for leisure purposes.

Campaigners have challenged Northern Trust to return the land to its original use.

Councillor Ralph Snape said: "They should build a football pitch, bowling green and changing facilities and use the £250,000 to maintain it. The land is for the amenity of all the people of Chorley."
