A £7,000 scheme to install CCTV cameras in an Accrington park plagued by young troublemakers has been approved.

Problems with graffiti and vandalism at Oakhill Park have prompted the move, which local councillor Paul Barton said has been a "top priority".

Three cameras, along with two dummy cameras, will be sited in the park near the play area, backed up by recording equipment housed in service buildings.

There will also be a "talking sign", to alert passers-by they are in a CCTV zone.

The sign will be triggered when people walk by them at certain hot-spot' times.

Messages from the sign include: "Anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated in this area", and "You are now entering a CCTV-controlled area".

Craig Horabin, from Hyndburn Council parks department, said: "There have been a number of incidents in the park over the last year that have resulted in vandalism and damage. The war memorial and bandstand have been attacked."

He said the play area was chosen as a site for the cameras because that is where many of the problems have been occurring, but they can be moved if necessary.

Cash for the CCTV scheme has come from the Peel and Barnfield Area Council budget, and council officers are now investigating the possibility of buying a mobile CCTV camera in the near future to use in the area.

A new Friends of Oakhill Park group has been set up to give local people a greater role in improving the park.

Coun Barton said: "We have got a great park there and we want it to be looked after and not wrecked."
