A Blackpool drug addict who let her pet bulldog maul police has been barred from owning a dog as part of an interim Anti-Social Behaviour Order (Asbo).

Mum-of-two Cherrill Ann Carpenter, 49, of Gainsborough Road, must not "own or be in possession or control of any dog" as part of the Asbo imposed by magistrates in the resort on Tuesday.

Carpenter was evicted by the council for allowing her Thornber Road home to be used as a 'crackhouse' last December.

The ASBO follows years of prosecutions by police and council dog wardens against Carpenter for repeatedly allowing her three-year-old French Bull Mastiff cross pet to run riot, without a leash, in the Tyldesley area of the town.

Dog wardens claim there were several complaints made against the dog, which has disappeared, and its owner, after members of the public were chased, snapped at and - on two occasions - bitten by the unleashed animal.

Carpenter also allowed her pet to attack and cause injury to police officers on a further two separate occasions.

Under the terms of the order Carpenter is also prohibited from being within one mile of her former council-owned home and causing "harassment or distress to others" including "threatening, abusive, insulting or intimidating behaviour".

Blackpool police Asbo officer, Bev Woods said: "We're very pleased with this week's result as Carpenter is a long-term, repeat offender who has little regard for the safety of the public or police officers."

The council's Community Safety and Drugs Partnership Development Officer, Inspector Louise Leyland said: "I hope this sends out a strong message to Blackpool residents that they do not have to tolerate anti-social behaviour - of all descriptions - in their area.

"The address in Thornber Grove was identified as a priority by local residents and we have responded to those community concerns.

"This action demonstrates the willingness of the council and police to use all available legislation to take action against an address which has been

brought to our notice by the local communities due to the anti-social actions of the occupants."

Police are now compiling evidence to pursue a full Asbo against Carpenter in May.
