POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a man was found with a broken jaw and severe head injuries in the Mill Hill area of Blackburn.

The man, who was found unconscious in Moorgate Street by a passer-by, cannot remember anything about the incident.

But doctors who treated him at Blackburn Royal Infirmary said his injuries, which also included severe swelling and bruising to his cheek and eye, suggest he was assaulted.

The 28-year-old, who was wearing a jumper with blue and white horizontal stripes and dark trousers, had been at a party in Hollin Bridge Street on Friday night and left with friends in the early hours of Saturday to walk home to Mill Hill.

At St Aidan's Avenue he decided to split with his friends and walk a different way. He walked past Mill Hill Working Men's Club just after 12.30am and was then found unconscious 20 minutes later.

Detective Sergeant Mick Cross, from Blackburn CID, said: "He only regained consciousness on Saturday afternoon and was still very groggy. He is unable to explain how he received the injuries.

"The doctor has indicated the injuries appear consistent with him being assaulted. There is a period of about 20 minutes from when he walked past the working men's club, to when he was found where we are trying to establish what happened to him."

Det Sgt Cross added that robbery was not thought to be the motive because the man's personal possessions were still on him.
