A 13-YEAR-OLD girl was fighting for her life today after sustaining 'severe' brain injuries in an horrific three-car-smash.

Anisa Khan, of Lister Street, Accrington, was being driven to school in Blackburn by her dad Abdul Khan, 49, when the accident happened.

Police said their red Toyota Corolla was crossing Shadsworth Road when it collided with a silver Vauxhall Corsa.

It was pushed into a stationary LandRover Freelander.

Her mother Shameen, brothers Kamran, 23, Rizwan, 21 and sister Ambreen, 19, have been at the Alislah Islamic School's pupil's bedside throughout the night.

The teenager was described by paramedics as being "critically injured" as she was taken to Blackburn Infirmary for surgery before being transferred to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, Pendlebury.

It is believed that she suffered massive brain injuries and a broken left ankle, a broken right hip, and a suspected broken pelvis in yesterday's smash.

Today calls were made for traffic lights at the junction of Shadsworth Road and Fecitt Brow where the accident happened. And locals have described the point of collision as a "notorious accident blackspot."

Mr Kahn also sustained head and leg injuries and is currently still receiving treatment at Blackburn Royal Infirmary. Doctors have said he is still too ill to join the rest of his family at his daughter's bedside.

Fire crews cut the roof and both front doors off the car to release the pair who had become trapped when the sides of the car had impacted inwards.

Police closed off the roads leading up to the junction and traffic was diverted for three hours, causing tail backs during the rush-hour traffic.

Gary Monk, station manager at Hyndburn fire station, he said: "We needed to cut the car completely open to give the paramedics room to assess the casualties. The doors would not open because the car had been sandwiched in the crash."

Gladys Bostock, 87, of Fecitt Brow, who has lived at the junction for 30 years said: "There are so many accidents here. I have been asking the council to put lights there for as long as I can remember. But nothing happens, just more accidents.

"I had a fence put up on the pavement outside my house after a car crashed into my front garden. We don't even sit in our front room anymore because of the frequent sounds of crashes we hear. I hope before I die something is done. It's dangerous."

The driver of the Vauxhall Corsa, 18-year-old Miles Doyle, of Hastings Close, Blackburn, was taken to Blackburn Royal Infirmary with "whiplash type injuries" but has since been discharged.

The driver of the LandRover, Sharon Ratcliffe, from Burnley Road, Blackburn, was also treated at Blackburn Royal Infirmary for whiplash and shock.

Sergeant Stuart Isherwood described the accident as horrific and appealed for any witnesses to the accident to come forward.

He said: "There have been a number of accidents at the junction and there are poor sight lines but it is too close to the Shadsworth Road's junction with Accrington Road for traffic lights to be considered. However we would urge motorists to take extra care in this area."
