A TEENAGER is fighting for his life following a car crash in Burnley town centre.

The 18-year-old from Lancashire was taken to Burnley General Hospital with head injuries following the incident yesterday at 9.30pm.

He was later transferred to Royal Preston Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

He was today described as being in a critical condition.

A 19-year-old Pendle man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving this morning and was being interviewed by police today.

The crash happened in Grimshaw Street at the junction with Nicholas Street. Police were not involved until the early hours of this morning when the victim's health deteriorated.

Sgt Gareth Hill from Colne road traffic policing unit is appealing for witnesses.

He said: "At 9.30pm last night an accident occurred on Grimshaw Street at the junction with Nicholas Street. An ambulance was called to a male with head injuries.

"He was conveyed to Burnley General Hospital where his condition worsened. We were informed at 1.55am in the morning.

"Inquiries have revealed he sustained injuries as a result of a road traffic collision. Someone is in custody at the moment helping us with our inquiries.

"The young man injured is 18 years of age and comes from the Lancashire area. We haven't ascertained where he is living."

Police were today trying to trace the victim's family.
