THERE has been a great deal of publicity given to the future of Lancaster and Morecambe Town Halls.
I would like to suggest that an ample piece of land should be taken on an industrial estate close to the River Lune and an industrial building erected that could house all the offices and departments necessary for the function of local government by Lancaster City Council.
While industrial buildings do not appear very attractive, people have been studying (Morecambe High), playing, working and shopping in them for many years. The huge Reebok unit on White Lund shows that they can have more than one floor.
With modern insulation, air-conditioning, heating, lighting and soundproofing they can be very comfortable places while solar panels can be fitted to improve efficiency, rainwater can be collected, filtered and used for flushing toilets, and so on.
In the initial planning, ample space should be provided for car parking for workers and visitors, and local bus companies could even provide a service direct to the door.
For once let Lancaster City Council lead the way in showing others how to do things and when Westminster forces a regional assembly on North West Lancashire we will already have a building and the know-how to accommodate it.
A Peel, Bare.
