An 80-year-old Nelson woman had £600 stolen after a bogus tradesman called at her door.
A man went to her house in Edward Street and said he had done some repair work, but nothing had been done to the property. He took the cash and a black leather purse.
Sgt Graham Lister said: "Don't let anyone in your house. If anyone calls for payment refer them to the police, especially when you've not asked them to do work."
Police are looking for a white man described as 6ft tall with black short curly hair.
