BURNLEY town centre will be transformed into a business and leisure destination, if plan-ners behind the rebirth of the town centre have their way.

Award-winning architects Regeneris BDP said it wants to transform Burnley into a magnet for shopping, business and education and leisure and culture.

The Manchester-based firm is drawing up a masterplan.

And director Frances Glare said he was confident the ideas would complement present developments, such as the new health and leisure centre, in transforming the town's image.

He added: "The vision for Burnley town centre is eminently achievable, as evidenced by the progress on projects such as the new bus station, NHS LIFT project and the Oval shopping centre."

The council chose BDP because of its record in delivering projects such as Manchester's Cathedral Gardens.

Now the firm will ask residents for their views on what improvements they would like to see.

Aspects of the blueprint will be adopted later this year to turn Burnley into a "vibrant place for people to work, live and socialise".

Councillor Andy Tatchell, executive member for regeneration added: "The masterplan will become a key document, shaping the future development of the town centre and the local economy.

"It is important that the plans are designed to meet the needs and aspirations of the people of Burnley and we want to know what you think."
