A MAN was arrested on suspicion of possessing drugs at the start of a bid to clean up a deprived area of Burnley.

Police executed a drugs warrant in Westmorland Street yesterday morning and arrested a 35-year-old believed to have Class C drugs.

The arrest came on day one of a high profile campaign to clean up Trinity ward as police, Burnley Borough Council and other groups joined forces in Operation Hot Spot to tackle yobs, drugs and litter in deprived areas.

Trinity is ranked in the top two per cent of most deprived areas of England, worst unemployment rate in the country and of the worst wards in England for health, deprivation and disability.

Under Operation Hot Spot, action will be taken against bad tenants, there will be back yard clean ups and inspections, extra police patrols, graffiti removal, extra dog warden and park ranger patrols, purges on untaxed vehicles and enforcement action against fly tippers.

After six weeks of intensive action to clean up the area, the operation will move on to the next hot spot.
