RESIDENTS worried about abandoned cars in their neighbourhood are able to access a new council service.
Rossendale Council now has a fast-track removal service for abandoned or burnt-out vehicles in danger of attracting trouble makers.
The new system means a council officer will come out to the problem site and assess the vehicle.
If it falls into the highest risk category it will be removed within 24 hours by one of the authority's contractors.
Other vehicles will be removed within eight days.
Councillor Judith Driver, portfolio holder for Streetscene and Liveability, said: "Removing abandoned vehicles more quickly will reduce antisocial behaviour, cut vehicle arson and improve people's safety and quality of life. This is a real step forward."
The new service has been introduced thanks to new powers given to the council in the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005.
The act allows cars to be removed without display-ing notices. Anybody wanting to get rid of an abandoned vehicle should call Rossendale Council's Fast Track Removal service on 01706 871614.
