WELL done to the staff at Spex Opticians of Church Street, Accrington for scooping first place in the best-dressed window competition, also congratulations to the runners-up who also produced spectacular displays.
At the same time I have often thought how much brighter it would have been, especially in the town centre if all the shops would make a special effort to lighten up our town.
Hyndburn Council does the best it can with limited funding.
Many shops made little or no effort to help bring the Christmas spirit into the community, but still expected shoppers to roll in and fill the tills.
There is nothing nicer than seeing people of all ages staring in amazement at the colourful displays in the windows, in time maybe drawing them into the shops.
Before the usual moan comes back about the cost involved, surely trimmings and beautiful displays could be stored away until the following festive season. I know the general public would appreciate the effort, I am sure.
We must also remember that Christmas time is very short-lived, compared with the rest of the year. So come on, let's make the next Christmas much brighter than the one this year.
ROSEMARY SPEDDING (Mrs), Oswald Street, Accrington.
