LIVERPOOL'S Xabi Alonso was not the only player to score from the half-way line on Saturday - just ask Darwen!
Josh Howard did an "Alonso" to score in spectacular fashion in the 56th minute, looping the ball over the stranded Darwen goalkeeper to seal FC United's 15th win of the season at the expense of Steve Mullen's plucky side.
However, if was far from a humiliating result for Darwen who battled well against the side 14 points clear at the top of the NWCFL Division Two table.
The home side took the lead after 22 minutes when a break down the wing and a pin-point cross left Simon Carden with an easy tap-in for his 18th of the season.
FC United, who have lost just once this season, could have won by a greater margin having a shot cleared off the line and striking the post.
Darwen had their moments but failed to test the United goalkeeper and the defeat leaves them sixth in the table, nine points off second place.
