AN INNOVATIVE crime-fighting tool devised by a Nelson policeman could be used all over the country.
Former engineer PC Mark Wilcock came up with the idea of fitting special tamper-proof screws on number plates to prevent thieves stealing them.
Registration plates are targeted by thieves to disguise their own cars when they commit crime, such as stealing petrol from filling stations.
And PC Wilcock's tamper-proof screws have helped reduce the amount of number plates stolen in Nelson.
Now other police forces have been asking about the scheme, so officers from Pendle have created a DVD explaining the initiative, which they are mailing out to police across the country.
PC Wilcock, Whitefield community beat manager, said: "Fitting tamper-proof screws is very simple, but effective. It is proving to be a deterrent for thieves, and a reassuring measure for local motorists. The feedback we've had from the public has been phenomenal.
"We're delighted that other forces are looking to follow our lead, but we'll also make sure we continue the good work right here in Pendle."
The clutch-head screws need special tools to take them off.
Thousands of motorists have already had the screws fitted to their number plates at sessions across Pendle, Burnley and Rossendale. The next free fitting session will be at Kwik Save, Colne, on January 20, between 10am and 2pm.
