Jean Leslie, from United Utilities' customer team, urged householders to ask for and check ID closely before allowing anybody in.
She said: "At this time of year, the thieves know only too well that many of us will have gifts and perhaps extra money in the house and they will not think twice about stealing it.
"Our engineers will not mind waiting while you check they are who they say they are and our message is quite simple - 'if in doubt keep them out.'"
United Utilities' tips on preventing bogus callers include:
o Using the United Utilities password scheme - ring 0845 746 1100 to register.
o Asking the caller to call back later when you have someone with you if you are still unsure.
