A MUM today told of her horror after her son was "attacked" and left lying in a hospital bed with a knife sticking out of his leg.

Daniel Warburton, 21, from Blackburn, was seriously injured on New Year's Day as he tried to remove people from a friend's party.

Today his distraught mum Yvonne said she was grateful her son was not dead and added: "When your children go out at night you don't know if you are kissing them goodnight or goodbye for the last time."

Daniel, who lives in Blackburn with his girlfriend and works in the town as a forklift truck driver, was injured at 6am after seeing in the New Year in Stockport.

Police were called to the house in the Shaw Heath area and found Daniel lying injured with stab wounds to his thigh.

He was taken to intensive care at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport, where surgeons operated on his leg and removed the knife.

Daniel may still need to undergo further surgery. It is not yet known how long he will be in hospital or if there will be any lasting effects.

Yvonne, of Stockport, said: "I'm devastated, we are all devastated. I am still in shock to say the least.

"I was told what had happened on New Year's Day at 6.45am.

"I went to see him and the knife was still stuck in him. We were in shock and horror when we saw that.

"But then you think that there could be something more horrific that could have happened to him.

"Lots of youngsters carry weapons without thinking of the consequences."

She said that it was as yet unclear how Daniel was coping with his ordeal.

Yvonne added: "He is a lot better than he has been doing but it is hard to know how he is feeling.

"He is probably still in shock and he has been on painkillers so he has not made too much sense yet.

"He is just a normal lad who wants to get on with his life.

"He was at a very close family friend's New Year party and we never thought something like this would happen.

"We have had great support from our family and friends. The phone has never stopped ringing and that has helped."
