An investigation has been launched after more than £2,000 worth of counterfeit goods were seized on a Preston market.

Nearly 100 pairs of fake Nike trainers and other sports kit labelled as top name brands, including Lacoste, Timberland and Bench, were found on a handful of stalls during pre-Christmas raids.

Stall owners are being interviewed, and trading standards officers are trying to trace the goods back to the original suppliers.

Jim Potts, chief trading standards officer, said: "It's not clear where these goods have come from which is why we have to try and trace it right back to the person who first produced them."

Mr Potts said it was possible they could have come from anywhere in the world.

He said they had a big task ahead and conceded that the investigation could last for more than six months. But he sent a stern message to traders: "This type of selling will not be tolerated and we would urge shoppers to be very careful," he said.

"But we understand it is becoming increasingly difficult to spot false goods as there are some very good copies available.

"It is possible that not even the stall owners knew they were buying counterfeit clothing."

The raids were part of a county-wide sweep which recovered more than £200,000 worth of fake goods.

Although police have not been informed, Mr Potts said criminal proceedings could not be ruled out.

He said: "We do not know the full circumstances but we certainly are not afraid of bringing proceedings against anyone who has breached trademarks.

"People found by our officers could face prosecution, fines or even imprisonment."
