A New Year reveller who was viciously attacked in an unprovoked mugging has appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Matthew Parkinson, 32, of Canterbury Road, Ribbleton, Preston, was attacked on his way to buy a late night takeaway meal after welcoming in the new year on Saturday night with wife Pamela, 29, and three friends.

It was the first new year as a married couple for Matt and Pamela who wed in August 2005.

They had spent the night at the Anderton Arms, Longsands Lane, before returning home after midnight.

"I felt a bit peckish so I told Pamela to get into her pyjamas while I nipped out to get something to eat," said the security guard and driver.

He walked along Acregate Lane where he was wished a happy new year by a couple leaving the Labour Club in the street.

While he was making his way along Maitland Street at about 1am towards the fast food outlet, the Red Onion, in New Hall Lane, he was attacked from behind and punched in the back of the head.

"I fell to the ground and before I could get back up I was kicked or punched in the back of the head," he said. "That's all I can remember."

When he regained consciousness a few minutes later, his wallet containing £70 had been taken.

He then called the police and was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital for a check up for swelling and bruising.

He added: "It spoilt a good night, we just can't get our heads around it."

Investigating officer detective sergeant, John Crichton, added: "These two lads have come out of a side alley and prayed on him because of his inebriated state.

"But they have used considerable violence and are dangerous so need to be caught."
