LANCASTER is to be painted pink as the city's first ever Pride Festival takes place - with thousands set to enjoy the party.
Organisers from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community are now making last-minute arrangements for the nine-day event which kicks off on Thursday, which happens to be World Aids Awareness Day. A silent vigil takes place at Lancaster Priory from 6.15pm.
The events official opening ceremony will be in Lancaster Town Hall on Friday, when guests will include gay rights activist Peter Tatchell.
Prior to that there will be a torch-lit procession from the St Nicholas Arcade at 6pm.
On Saturday there is an exhibition hosted by LGBT group Pyro' at the Gregson Centre.
The event has won funding from the National Lottery as well as Lancaster City Council's local strategic partnership fund.
Says spokesman Miriam Murtin: "It is important that we are able to celebrate with our family and friends, regardless of their sexuality. That's part of what Pride is about, being able to be who you are with the people who matter to you most."
