I READ the article headed 'Death sentence' in the Citizen of November 16 with some dismay.
Since buying a house in Morecambe it seems obvious to me that once the Midland Hotel is redeveloped then the missing piece in the jigsaw is the decrepit area where the Polo tower stands.
Surely, since the last scheme fell through from lack of interest and investment, this initiative is a good idea. New apartments, town houses and shops, together with a leisure centre, have got to be a good thing.
Do the 71 people who have petitioned against it prefer the present empty and unsightly wasteland? Anyway, only 71 out of the whole town is a pretty small minority.
Other questions I would ask are who knew that there was a plan going through for approval and so raised the petition, and who was approached to sign it?
It seems to me, from what I read in the papers, that any time any scheme or plan for the town is suggested there is an immediate knee-jerk reaction against it.
Mr Catterall is quoted in your article as saying: "The council is selling off the family jewels." But I understand that the land in fact belongs to Morrison's and a Blackpool Leisure company, not the council.
He also asks if the council knows where Morecambe is. I would suggest that if the council does in fact move up to new offices in the town it might be a good thing members and officers would then certainly know where Morecambe is and might look with favour on improved road links so as to get to work and back more quickly.
For goodness sakes let us move on and get the land redeveloped.
G Walker, Morecambe
