TEACHERS at a Clitheroe school have warned pupils about the dangers of traffic after a teenager suffered a broken arm when he ran in front of a car.

The 15-year-old boy, who attends Ribblesdale High School, was in hit by a Toyota Yaris after he ran into the road in an attempt to catch his bus home.

His right arm was broken and he was taken to Burnley General Hospital.

Thursday afternoon's accident, on a slip road near the school linking Moor Lane and Queensway, has prompted teachers to urge pupils to take care on journeys to and from school.

The incident, which happened just after the school closed at 3.15pm, is the second road accident involving pupils from the school this year.

In February, two 12-year-old boys fell from the side window of a Blackburn Transport bus as it approached the school, in Queen's Road.

Neither boy was seriously injured.

An investigation found the youngsters had stood up ready to get off the bus, the number 617 from Mellor.

But they fell from the window when it negotiated a sharp right-hand bend just yards away from the school's front gate.

Stephen Cox, the school's deputy head, confirmed a Year 11 pupil from the Burnley area was involved in the latest incident.

He said: "The school will be reiterating to pupils the need to take extra care on the roads when travelling to and from school, particularly when they leave school and travel home because at this time of year it's darker and visibility is worse.

"We do have staff monitoring in front of the school so pupils are watched when they leave our premises and when they board school buses.

"This incident did not happen immediately in front of the school gates and did not involve a school bus."

PC Justin Brown, of Clitheroe police, said: "I understand this lad ran out in front of the car when he was trying to catch a bus.

"He fractured his right arm but is otherwise okay.

"I would also urge youngsters to use the Green Cross Code at all times."
