CAMPAIGNERS were today celebrating victory in their fight for parking restrictions outside an East Lancashire school.
Parents and staff at West End Primary School, Oswaldtwistle, had been joined by Hyndburn MP Greg Pope in calling for something to be done to control the traffic chaos.
Their plight was featured in the Lancashire Evening Telegraph last week.
Today, Lancashire County Council told the campaigners their protests had been heard.
Double yellow lines will be introduced opposite the school for 10 metres either side of the junction of Aspen Road with Harlech Drive.
West End headteacher Janet Aspinall said it was fantastic news.
She said: "I am delighted. At the school we have been trying to solve the problem of parking for the last two or three years.
"I have no doubt that the parking restrictions will have a positive effect. It will make the area safer and it will make it easier for the police and traffic wardens to punish people parking illegally."
A petition, with five pages of signatures, was collected by parent Claire Thelwell after her seven-year-old daughter Jennifer was bumped by a car as they tried to cross to the school.
Mrs Thelwell said: "It is good news and should help to keep the children safe.
"At the moment it is not safe to cross the road and I hope these restrictions come in quickly."
Hyndburn Council confirmed that the proposed parking restrictions had now been placed on to the council's scheme of work and after a period of consultation it was hoped they would be carried out next year.
