Detectives are investigating allegations of bullying over the tragic death of a St Annes schoolboy found hanged in his bedroom.

Blackpool's Detective Inspector Andy Webster said his team were investigating allegations of bullying following the death of Lytham St Annes High School pupil, Paul Moran, 13, who was discovered by his mother hanging in his bedroom at Spring Gardens on Sunday afternoon.

The teenager was pronounced dead at Blackpool Victoria Hospital shortly after 1pm. A post mortem examination later confirmed the cause of death as hanging.

It is believed the allegations of bullying - both in school and in the local community - came to light on Monday after Lytham St Annes High headteacher, Philip Wood, addressed the school over the tragedy.

Officers are now said to be investigating these and other unspecified allegations.

Detective Inspector Webster said: "Paul's family have reiterated their wish that their privacy is respected at this difficult time.

"This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with them.

"We are keeping an open mind as to the circumstances behind this event and will follow up all lines of enquiry."

A team of grief counsellors from Lancashire County Council Critical Incident Support Team have been sent to the school following a request by Mr Wood, to help students come to terms with his death.

And an LCC spokesman said that any confirmed allegations of bullying would be "treated very seriously" following police investigations.

The council spokesman said: "The school has a comprehensive anti-bullying policy in place and this forms a central ethos for the school and its curriculum.

"Police inquiries are very much ongoing at this stage but any confirmation of bullying will be treated very seriously by both the school and the education authority."

Paying tribute to the youngster headteacher, Mr Wood said: "This is tragic news and our sympathy goes out to Paul's family and friends at this sad time.

"Paul was a pleasant, friendly pupil with a positive attitude to school. We have been devastated by this news.

"Police are looking into the matter and we shall offer them any assistance if we are able."

In a statement, Paul's family added: "This is a tragic incident and we are all deeply shocked hurt and sorry he has gone.

"He was a great son, brother and uncle and we all miss him dearly.

"It was apparent that he was very popular at school."
