Trophy triumph
CLITHEROE 2
WOODLEY SPORTS 1
A wonder goal in the closing moments from Gary Williams sent the Blues into the first round of this season's FA Trophy.
The ex-Accrington Stanley front man was introduced to the action from the bench and wasted no time in putting his mark on the match.
With just two minutes left on the clock it appeared a replay would be required to separate the two sides until Williams clinical intervention.
The ball was played into him just outside the Woodley penalty area and his first time control using his chest was perfect as he pulled it down to his feet.
Then with an injection of pace and strength he beat his marker, skipped into the penalty area and calmly smashed the ball past Liam Higginbotham to secure victory.
Woodley came to spoil the game and after taking an early lead in controversial circumstances were happy to try and run the clock down.
With just five minutes played new Clitheroe signing Gareth Evans was clean through on goal.
As he entered the penalty area he was fouled from behind for what appeared to be a certain penalty.
Amazingly the referee and his assistant were unmoved and Woodley sprung a counter attack.
Mario Sergio-Daniels saw his shot cannon back off the bar but he was the quickest to react and volleyed the rebound in from close range.
Evans missed Clitheroe's best first half opportunity when he headed over from close range.
Clitheroe bossed the majority of the second half and almost went in front just after the restart.
Paul Rogers rose well to head the ball down for Evans and his first time volley just whistled over the bar.
The equaliser arrived on 55 minutes when Paul Stansfield found himself unmarked in the box as he headed home a Roger's cross.
This visitors still appeared to happy with a draw, but the introduction of Williams soon ended that notion as his stunning late strike saw the Blues enter the hat for Monday's draw.
